According to the original survey plan conducted in 1875, CLSR Plan No.122, Indian Reserve (IR) 22A1 has a total landmass of 3,751 acres (1518 Ha).  It consists mainly of forested rocky shoreline and a large area of muskeg/bog.  For the past century IR 22A1 was accessible by boat from the township of Savanne, located on Provincial Highway #17.  In the winter, Reserve 22A1 was accessible by 20 kilometres of ice road.  Since the summer of 2006 IR 22A1 is also now accessible by a newly constructed access road (South McKay Creek Road) that extends from the Lac des Mille Lacs road, off Provincial Highway #17, through the northern part of the Reserve to Sand Point. LDMLFN IR 22A1 is the land referred to in the Capital Planning Study.

Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation's other reserve land, Lac des Mille Lacs Indian Reserve 22A2, is located roughly 20 kilometres to the west of IR 22A1 on the banks of the Firesteel and Seine Rivers.  IR 22A2 has a total landmass of 8,475 acres (3430 Ha) and consistes mainly of forested lands.  22A2 is accessible from the Sapawe Road that extends from Provincial Highway #17.
